How to read this map

Each circle marks a confirmed outbreak location. The circle area scales with reported case count using a square-root scale, so the 2014 West Africa epidemic does not visually drown out the smaller, more recent outbreaks. The active 2026 PHEIC is shown in solid ochre with a soft halo; historical outbreaks are dimmed.

Three filters control what you see: only the active 2026 outbreak, everything since 2014 (when WHO standardised the Disease Outbreak News format), or the full historical record back to the 1976 index outbreaks at Yambuku and Nzara.

Locations are placed at the most commonly reported town or health zone for each outbreak. Coordinates were cross-checked against OpenStreetMap. Where WHO reports a province-level total without locality breakdown, a single centroid is used; province-wide spread is not visually represented here.
